Japan. The Second World War began on September 1, 1939, and ended on September
2, 1945. Many countries were involved in the war, and they all chose sides:
Allies or Axis. Germany, Italy, and Japan were the central Axis powers. The
main Allies were the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and the Soviet
Union (Russia). World War II caused the deaths of approximately 64
million people. The United States devised a plan to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki
to end World War II until Japan officially ended the war on September 2, 1945,
a day known as VJ Day. Throughout Europe, World War II ended on May 8, 1945,
also known as VE Day. Another fact is that Rhode Island is the only state that
officially recognizes the end of World War II as an annual legal holiday. The
second Monday in August is Victory Day.
